Our Saturday of Chickens and Ice
Well, it reached 18°F here in Vermont today, but the wind puts the temperature at 4°F. We tossed an old lettuce head and some pepper ends/seeds into the chicken run and they went wild for the veggies!
The snow is mostly gone with the warm weather we had in the middle of this week so they are happy to have bare ground to peck at. The stream opened up so they are also happy to be drinking fresh cold running water. I’m enjoying the fact that I don’t have to trudge down the hill with buckets of water today!
On a side note, we decided to take a short walk down to the lake. The wind was even worse there. It got so cold and the wind was so strong that I had tears running down my face that froze onto my jacket.
The crazy ice fishermen were out in their huts on the ice. With all the warm and cold weather we have been having, I’m not so sure that is a safe or smart idea as we spotted open water in a few spots. Oh well, I hope they are at least catching some fish!
We checked on the chickens upon our return but they seemed happy enough out in the wind scratching the ground. We on the other hand were frozen. Right now I am trying to have feeling return to my nose and toes while I sip hot tea and think of dinner plans. Happy Saturday everyone!
